Super-Secret Super Committee
Government Transparency watchdogs the Sunlight Foundation and its coalition partners, are sounding the alarm. The stakes are too high for the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction - better known as the Super Committee - to operate behind closed doors without public oversight.
The Public has a legal and ethical right to know what $1.5 trillion cuts to the federal budget are being discussed and what conflicts of interest the Super Committee members may have.
What’s it worth to Lockheed Martin, Goldman Sachs, Pfizer and Chevron, to secure a vote on the Super Committee? Why are campaign contributions to these 12 appointed Senators and Congressmen increasing since they were appointed to the Super Committee and who are the more than 200 special interest groups including defense, unions and healthcare, spending millions lobbying them? With nearly every facet of the American economy on the line during the committee’s examination of how to cut the federal budget, there is a mad scramble to influence the outcome.
Though promises were made by the Super Committee at the beginning of this process to operate with full transparency, the first public hearing in a month was only just held on October 26. While another hearing is scheduled for November 1, the lack of public events makes it seem like the Super Committee is becoming a “legislative black box.”
