Congress Can't Fix Your Health
With the shift in power in Congress, health care is once again in the news. Republicans vow to reverse the landmark legislation that strived, for the first time, to give all Americans access to care. Missed in the discussion of dollars, doctors and drugs is the number one way to reduce medical costs: take simple steps to keep healthy. And if you do need to treat a medical condition, first consider alternatives to the pill bottle or high price procedures.
Colin Hoobler is a physical therapist, trainer, TV host and author of two books. His passion is teaching people how to treat disease and injury using exercise and diet as opposed to drugs. “Many people, especially doctors, don’t realize that the best treatment for chronic pain and disease is sound exercise and diet. While it’s always easier to take a pill for your back pain, diabetes, arthritis or fibromyalgia, the research is clear: exercise is the best medication if you want lasting results. However, it’s got to be done right.”
Colin’s New Year’s resolution for the public: “Realize you cannot buy health; you must work at it via sound exercise and diet. This takes a positive attitude, time and practice. Need a compelling reason to start? It's patriotic! Assuming personal responsibility for your health won't just help you feel 100 percent better; it will also cut health care costs. The statistic is staggering: America spends 83 cents of every health care dollar on obesity-related conditions (Obesity Campaign, 2005).”
